Newton Electrical Supply - lighting tips for your home - use low voltage lighting or dimmers and controls to save on electrical costs, or switch to CFL bulbs for increased savings

Light Bulbs :

1 - Dimming

Dimming an incandescent light bulb will not only save electricity, it will also extend the life of your light bulb. Dimming can also create different moods in a room. In a dining room, for example, have the lights bright for a holiday dinner full of conversation, or have them dimmed for a quiet dinner for two.

2 - Spring Lamps

Screw-in Compact fluorescent bulbs, sometimes called spring lamps, last up to 10 times longer than a regular light bulb and use about 75% less energy to run. A 14 watt spring lamp gives off about the same amount of light as a standard 60 watt incandescent light bulb. You can use these in many areas of your home to save energy and to save time by not having to change the light bulbs as often. Most spring lamps cannot be dimmed - be aware of this when installing them.

3 - MR16:

An MR16 light bulb is a small reflector bulb. The most common style is low voltage (12v) with a bi-pin base; however they also come in different voltages and with different bases. Most MR16's have what is called a dichroic reflector - this allows light to be reflected forward while also letting heat escape from the back of the bulb. One problem is that some light also escapes out of the back of the bulb, usually a pink color. When this bulb is used in some open fixtures, such as track lights, this pink color gets reflected against the ceiling which can be objectionable at times. There is an MR16 made that has a colored back to it - silver, black, and also bronze. The color fully covers the back of the bulb, eliminating any "back light". These bulbs are a good alternative to the standard MR16 light bulb.

4 - Globe bulbs:

There are many light fixtures that have glass that are directed downward, such as hanging kitchen lights and bathroom vanity lights. Many times a standard light bulbs is used, but these all have writing on the bulb which is usually visible and does not look very good. Globe bulbs can usually be used in these situations. Globe bulbs are completely round with a screw-in base. They come in many sizes, but a good size to use is a G19. It is a little smaller than a standard light bulb and has no writing on it. It will usually fit in most light fixtures depending on the size of the glass. G19 is not a very common size, but it is a great solution and can be found in most lighting showrooms.
